Name: Narrabri mine.

Location: The project is located 17 km south-east of Narrabri, 70 km north-west of Gunnedah, in New South Wales, Australia.

Mine Owner/s: Whitehaven (70%), J Power (7.5%) and three other companies each with 7.5%.

Brief Description: Narrabi is one of Australia’s most productive underground coal mines. The mine is approved to produce 11-million tonnes a year of high-quality thermal coal until 2031.

Brief History: The Narrabri mine has been operating since 2012.

Primary Metals/Minerals: Thermal coal.

Secondary Metals/Minerals: Not stated.

Geology/Mineralisation: Not stated.

Reserves: Total proven and probable marketable reserves for Narrabri North underground as at March 2019 were estimated 216-million tonnes.

Resources: Total mineral resources as at March 2019 were estimated at 636-million tonnes.

Mining Method: Underground, longwall mining.

Major Infrastructure and Equipment: The mine includes a coal handling preparation plant, a rail loop, portals and offices.

Prospects: The Narrabri underground mine Stage 3 extension project is a proposal to convert the existing Narrabri South exploration licence into a mining lease and extract coal. This extension accesses 80-million to 100-milion tonnes of coal using the established infrastructure.

The project involves extending the planned southern longwall panels into the adjacent Narrabri South exploration licence. This will extend the approved life-of-mine from 2031 to about 2045 and continue to provide employment for the current workforce.
