PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Mineral sands developer MZI Resources has reported a 68% increase in the mineral resource of its flagship Keysbrook project, in Western Australia, to 155-million tonnes, from the previous 92-million tonnes.

MZI on Friday said the increase in the resource was owing to exploration completed in the first part of the year.

The Keysbrook deposit itself recorded an increase in resources, from 79-million to 90-million tonnes, containing some two-million tonnes of heavy minerals.

The drilling programme also discovered the Yangedi deposit – to the immediate west of the Keysbrook deposit – which had a current resource of 51-million tonnes.

MZI noted that the increase in mineral resource at the Keysbrook area indicated a potential project life of more than 30 years, based on the current planned production rates, and subject to landowner access agreements, as well as environmental and planning approvals.

An updated ore reserve would be completed by the end of the year, prior to the start of production at Keysbrook.

MZI aims to produce more than 95 000 t/y of leucoxene and zircon from Keysbrook over the initial 5.5-year lifespan, which the company was hoping to increase.

The $70-million project was expected to produce its first mineral sands in early 2016.
