JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Aim-listed Mwana Africa on Thursday suspended plant processing operations at its Freda Rebecca gold mine, in Zimbabwe, following an incident in which one of the plant’s leach tanks ruptured and collapsed onto a second tank.

The rupture caused structural damage to the two tanks and a discharge of leach tank contents onto the ground surrounding the tanks beyond the bunded containment area.

Restoration work had already started with a view to resuming production within five days, following permission from the Mine Inspectorate and the Environmental Management Authority.

Mwana warned that short-term production volumes and medium-term gold recovery would be affected.

Five employees were affected by the incident and were in a stable condition but remained hospitalised.

“Our absolute priority is the health and safety of our employees and local community members. We will put in place the appropriate measures to contain any impact on the affected area as soon as possible, while investigating the cause of the collapse to prevent any future reoccurrence," Mwana CEO Kalaa Mpinga said in a statement.
