MRI further delays briquetting project
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – AltX-listed Mine Restoration Investments (MRI) has again delayed the commissioning of its briquetting project, with commercial commissioning now set to start in July, and full production expected in September.
This followed an announcement in April that the company had delayed full production until June.
MRI, which was established to tackle acid mine drainage in South Africa, had developed proprietary technology for coal briquetting, which was the process of converting anthracite fines into coal briquettes, for offtake back to mines for export. This technology was currently used in its flagship briquetting project.
The company said in a statement on Friday that excessive rainfall between February and April had created a hazardous on-site working environment, and had made the mine area inaccessible to heavy-duty vehicles.
All civil work was also delayed as safety and medical inductions had to be repeated for the creation of a new system of safety documentation before allowing the subcontractor to enter the site.
Further, owing to the nature of the fill area, additional excavation was required to remove larger amounts of waste.
“Despite the delays, management remains optimistic that the project will go into commercial operation. Revenues generated from this project will be used to further capitalise the company and grow the business,” MRI said.
