JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe intends to promote South Africa’s mining sector during a working visit to Canada next week.

The Deputy President plans to engage mining companies, investors, bankers and asset managers, besides others, between November 25 and 27, and encourage their investment in South Africa’s mining sector.

Motlanthe, who will be accompanied by the Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant and Deputy Mineral Resources Minister Godfrey Oliphant, will also meet with the Canada-South Africa Chamber of Commerce and the TSX, as well as Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Canada’s governor-general David Johnston.

“South Africa enjoys close political and economic relations with Canada and these are evidenced by high volumes of trade and investments between the two countries,” the Presidency said in a statement announcing the working visit.

Canada was currently a major player in the mining industry in Africa and the Deputy President would encourage Canadian companies to invest further in the mining and extractive sector in South Africa.

Bilateral trade between the two countries reached more than $1.3-billion during 2012, with exports reported at $634-million and imports at more than $693-million.
