PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Mining major Rio Tinto has awarded engineering group Monadelphous a A$235-million contract at the Cape Lambert project, in Western Australia.

The contract included structural mechanical and piping works for the supply and installation of a screenhouse, two car dumpers and associated conveyor and transfer stations.

Rio was adding some 55-million tonnnes a year of capacity at Cape Lambert by constructing a new wharf, in two stages. The first stage consisted of a two-sided berth that will provide facilities and loading for two very large ore carriers with the capacity to deliver up to 250 000 t of iron-ore to each.

Work on the second stage (Phase B), will add a 400 m wharf extension with another two berths. This second stage is already well advanced, with all dredging requirements and the majority of piling now completed.

Once all works have been completed the Cape Lambert port will have the largest export capacity of the three iron-ore port assets owned by Rio Tinto.

Monadelphous said on Wednesday that work on the new contract was scheduled for completion by the fourth quarter of 2014.
