JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Heavy minerals concentrate (HMC) production at London-listed Kenmare Resources’ Moma mine, in Mozambique, increased by 53% to 290 200 t in the quarter ended June 30.

This was compared with HMC output of 189 800 t in the previous quarter.

Ilmenite production rose 20% quarter-on-quarter, from 137 500 t in the three months ended March, to 165 100 t in the three months ended June.

Zircon production, however, decreased by 16% to 8 700 t, compared with the 10 400 t produced in the March quarter.

Kenmare pointed out that a scheduled shutdown of the mineral separation plant (MSP), to allow for the integration of a new auxiliary ilmenite plant into the control system of the existing MSP, had resulted in lower ilmenite and zircon production for the month of June.

However, Moma produced 100 000 t of HMC in the month of July, with a new wet concentrator plant contributing materially to the total. Ilmenite production for July totalled 80 000 t, including 16 500 t from the auxiliary ilmenite plant.

Kenmare noted that the nonmagnetic circuits, which produce zircon and rutile, and which were the last part of the Moma expansion project, were now substantially complete, with the circuits in ramp-up phase.

Meanwhile, product shipments in the June quarter increased to 245 600 t, compared with the 48 500 t shipped in the March quarter.
