Modena Design Centres, a software consulting and training company based in Johannesburg, is pleased to announce that it is the first company in South Africa to offer Supermicro servers using Nvidia Grid technology.

The server uses virtual GPU technology to bring accelerated performance to virtual desktops. Compared with current desktop systems, it is more scalable and deploys more quickly. It also allows for shared 3D graphics and 3D virtualisation, which have previously been unavailable. With server models up to 24 DIMMs and 768GB DDR3 memory, Supermicro servers offer high performance per watt, as well as exceptional bandwidth.

Francois Lottering, Supermicro’s regional manager, says, “We’re thrilled that Modena is partnering with us to be the first supplier of a server that is optimised for NVIDIA GRID computing, and that is specially tailored to the engineering industry that uses CAD software.”

Priding itself on being flexible and dynamic, Modena is the first company to officially import the Supermicro server that is configured to deliver Grid Technology into South Africa.

Says Gareth Modena, the company’s Projects Manager, “We’ve done extensive work to understand the technology and how it should be best deployed in the South African Market. We also have the best access to the customers who need this type of technology.”

ELB, a company that designs material-handling systems for large and medium capital projects, is the first Modena client to implement a vGPU enabled Supermicro server in South Africa. ELB needed a scalable system where they could add designers and engineers to a project with the shortest timeframe.

With the Supermicro framework, ELB’s new ability to scale teams far quicker than before and assign systems that fit the designers’ work packages is giving them better turnaround times for starting projects.

“We are pleased that our efforts in ICT and our extensive 3D and CAD knowledge have helped Modena integrate this technology, and that we’re the first in South Africa with this particular toolset,” says Gareth.
