Mining companies are expected to positively contribute to sustainable social and economic development by reducing their environmental footprint and supporting biodiversity, particularly considering the scale at which resources, such as water, are used by the mining industry.

To facilitate sustainable development, diversified major Anglo American has developed a sustainable mining plan through extensive in-house and external engagement, as well as analysis of critical opportunities and risks, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The plan has also been developed to foster innovation and deliver step-change results across the entire mining value chain, from mineral discovery to marketing, the company says.

A key commitment of Anglo American is to be part of the solution to climate change which is embedded across the business as it continues to align its portfolio with the needs of a low carbon-emitting world.

The miner is restructuring its operations towards carbon neutrality, pushing for decarbonisation along its value chains, and carefully considering the social and wider environmental inter-relationships associated with its decarbonisation journey.

Owing to mining and processing activities using significant amounts of water and energy, Anglo American has combined technical and social expertise to provide advice and support on reducing water and energy requirements at mine operations.

In 2020, Anglo American focused on updating its water-accounting methodology to validate all data against water balances and apply consistent definitions in line with those of international organisations such as International Council on Mining and Metals.

As 75% of Anglo American’s assets are located in water-constrained areas, the company has prioritised reducing its dependence on water, as well as wet tailings facilities, says the company. These efforts are addressed under the healthy environment pillar of the Sustainable Mining Plan.

Through integrated and complementary FutureSmart Mining technologies, the company is reducing the amount of fresh water used and is moving to closed-loop and, ultimately, dry-processing in its operations.

This will create stable, dry and economically viable land, says Anglo American.

Anglo American also prioritises its role in supporting host governments in meeting the SDGs through its work in creating and leaving a positive legacy in host communities.

Through its transition to a lower carbon-emissions business model, the company continues to explore the role of mining in a just transition, which considers the impacts of that transition on workers and communities.

Together with its partners, it aims to create environmentally and socially sustainable jobs, sectors and economies that are needed to help address climate change.
