TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – US coal miner Alpha Natural Resources has reported that a miner has died at affiliate Paramont Coal Company’s Deep Mine 41, near McClure, in Virginia.

The NYSE-listed miner reported on Monday that David Brummitte (34) of Pound, Virginia, was found around 05:10 Monday.

Brummitte was treated at the scene and then transported to the Dickenson Community Hospital, in Clintwood, where he was pronounced dead at about 7:45.

Brummitte, a certified workplace examiner, had worked for Paramont for two years at Deep Mine 41 and preliminary information suggested that he was conducting a preshift exam when he was struck by rock sloughing off the mine wall.

Paramont president Mike Clark noted that there did not appear to have been any eyewitnesses at the scene. “We are working diligently with state and federal agencies to confirm the circumstances of the accident,” he said in a statement.
