A newly built goat milking factory, which was constructed on Biesiespoort farm, in the Loxton area of the Karoo, has the potential to create a number of job opportunities in the area.

Built by Biesiespoort owner and farmer Jan Wiese and designed by cheese producer La Montanara owner Eckard Leicher, the factory is able to milk about 1 000 goats at a time.

“The Karoo Milkgoat Factory rotates workers each week, with about two people manning the place for each shift. The farm aims to open a restaurant in the near future, which will also employ people from the Loxton area,” says Wiese Business Trust marketer Karike Scheeres.

The facility, which took three months to complete, sees two milking sessions each day and was built to allow for large-scale cheese production. It produces about 4 000 ℓ/d and the milk is used for producing feta, cheddar, Gouda and yoghurt.
The factory was built after Wiese and his brother, Dries Wiese, from the neighbouring Kasteel farm, learnt that they had a surplus of goats. The farmers were planning to sell the goats, when Leicher suggested that the factory be built.

The factory is unique, as the milk is pumped directly from the milking stall to the factory where it is processed. The goats are milked through a fully automated, ten-point reverse system and the pulses of the system are faster than those of an ordinary dairy farm’s.
