Name and Location
Metalloys smelter complex expansion, Gauteng, South Africa.

Client
Samancor Manganese, in which BHP Billiton has a 60% share and Anglo American a 40% share.

Project Description
The project involved the construction of a new 81 MVA, energy efficient furnace, with a capacity to produce 120 000 t/y of high-carbon ferromanganese, at Samancor Manganese’s Metalloys smelter complex, in Meyerton, Gauteng.

The new M14 furnace, which is purported to be the largest of its kind in the world, will operate adjacent to the company’s three other furnaces and will allow BHP Billiton to beneficiate close to 30% of the manganese ore it mines locally.

The furnace uses improved technology, allowing the offgas that is emitted to be used for additional power generation, which increases electricity self-sufficiency on the site to 20% and reduces the electricity supply burden on South Africa’s hard-pressed State-owned power utility Eskom.

Value
R1-billion.

Duration
The furnace was built in 16 months.

Latest Developments
South Africa’s Mineral Resources Minister, Susan Shabangu, opened the furnace on March 6.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
None stated.

On Budget and on Time?
