PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Coal developer Whitehaven Coal has progressed its Maules Creek project, in New South Wales, appointing project house Leighton Contractors to construct the rail loop for the project.

Whitehaven said on Thursday that the rail loop was a key part of the mine infrastructure and the longest lead-time item for the project.

“This is a very important milestone for Whitehaven’s Maules Creek project. Once the mine begins production in the first quarter of 2015, it will strengthen the company’s position as a major low-cost coal producer in Australia,” said Whitehaven MD and CEO Paul Flynn.

The Maules Creek project was recently given the go-ahead for construction after the Federal Court dismissed an injunction against the start of construction work.

The injunction was brought by environmental group Northern Inland Council for the Environment, or NICE, in an effort to halt construction before a judgment was made in a separate case that was challenging the validity of the former Environment Minister’s approval of the mine.
