Marmion calls for safety focus as another death is reported
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Western Australian Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Marmion has called on mining companies to step up efforts to improve safety on mine sites, after four deaths were reported over the past five months.
The latest incident occurred at the BrightStar mine, near Laverton, where a worker was fatally injured while operating machinery.
“This fifth death is a tragic reminder there is absolutely no room for complacency,” Marmion said.
“I make no comment on the circumstances of this incident, but I will say in general that, with the resources sector facing tighter margins, it is the responsibility of industry to guarantee safety is never short-changed.
“Safety is an obligation on everyone in the mining industry, including contractors, but it’s incumbent on mining companies to drive the overall safety culture across their operations. Safety is not something you can outsource.”
Following a review by the Department of Mines and Petroleum, which identified the highest risk of worker accidents was in the first two years of their mining careers, the department this week called for industry submissions on new guidelines for safety and health supervision.
Marmion pointed out that while there has been a notable improvement in mine safety trends during the past decade, the department was continuing its work to reduce mine fatalities.
