Maritime training facility receives accreditation for skipper courses
Cape Town-based Nautic Maritime Training Academy (NMTA) recently received accreditation from the South African Maritime Safety Authority (Samsa) for a number of its courses relating to certificates of competency for skippers under a variety of conditions.
The accreditation enables NMTA to provide Samsa-approved tickets from the level of Day Skipper and upwards. These include documents for skippers of deep-sea skiboats and rigid-hull inflatable boats, as well as other small craft no longer than 9 m and weighing up to 25 t.
Further accreditation was also provided for the training of day skippers for category R, E, C and B vessels longer than 9 m and weighing less than 100 t, as well as coastal skipper’s tickets for operations up to 40 nautical miles offshore.
Crew training provided by NMTA includes theory and practical modules, which address all areas of vessel operation and maintenance training, including safety procedures, vessel handling, capabilities and limitations, as well as on-board maintenance.
NMTA head Neil de Villiers says, “we know that the ocean demands a high level of competence and our dedication and expert training aims to ensure that crew achieve the highest standards.”
Classes are undertaken at the NMTA premises in Paarden Eiland, Cape Town, with exams and practical tests scheduled every two to three weeks or when demand arises.
Nautic Group is a company of Paramount Group, and offers turnkey maritime solutions that include new vessel design and construction, new vessel leasing and life-cycle services, vessel operating and vessel support.
