Major green energy hub tipped in WA

PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The Western Australian government has welcomed the proposal for a major hydrogen hub in the state, which could scale-up to become one of the world’s largest renewable energy projects.

An international consortium comprising InterContinental Energy, CWP Global and Mirning Green Energy has announced their intent to build an integrated green fuels megaproject in the southeast of Western Australia.

When fully operational, the Western Green Energy Hub (WGEH) could produce up to 50 GW of hybrid wind and solar power over 15 000 km2 in south-east Western Australia, across the shires of Dundas and the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

WGEH will be built in phases to produce up to 3.5-million tonnes of zero-carbon green hydrogen or 20-million tonnes of green ammonia each year, which will be provided domestically and exported internationally as the green fuels market continues to expand post-2030.

The consortium said in a statement that the green fuels produced at the site would meet massive future demand from multiple sectors, including in co-firing in power generation, the shipping sector, heavy industry such as steel, chemicals and mining, as well as the aviation sector.

The green hydrogen sector is predicted to become a $2.5-trillion market by 2050.

“The WGEH is historic on two fronts. First, the scale at which we will be able to deliver green fuels to markets and customers around the world, helping to move us all towards a net-zero future,” said WGEH chairperson Brendan Hammond.

“Second, and possibly more importantly, the way in which we are working with the Mirning People, the original owners of the land, to create a truly long-term and sustainable multi-generational partnership that delivers enormous socioeconomic benefits for the community. It is an honour and a privilege to be involved in this groundbreaking project.”

Mirning Green Energy, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Mirning Traditional Lands Aboriginal Corporation, will have a meaningful carried equity stake in the project, along with a permanent seat on the WGEH consortium board.

"The WGEH is a truly massive proposal that would see WA home to one of the world's largest renewable energy projects,” said Western Australian Hydrogen Industry Minister Alannah MacTeirnan.

"Importantly, this project is a powerful collaboration between the Mirning traditional owners and industry, and would be a transformational opportunity for the community.

"We look forward to continuing to work with the consortium as they develop their detailed studies and move towards an investment decision.

"Right across Western Australia, we are seeing renewable hydrogen projects taking their next steps forward, from the Kimberley to Esperance.

"Our state is perfectly positioned to lead the global renewable hydrogen industry, delivering a strong economic future for Western Australia and becoming a major contributor to global decarbonisation."

The state government has committed more than A$35-million towards developing a job-creating renewable hydrogen industry in Western Australia, and is delivering on the targets of the Western Australian Renewable Hydrogen Strategy.
