PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Rare earths miner Lynas was facing some teething problems at its advanced materials plant (Lamp), in Malaysia.

The miner said that by early June, the company had achieved nameplate production capacity in the cracking and leaching units of Phase 1 of the Lamp, after the project was commissioned in November last year.

However, some clogging and premature wearing had affected the plant’s ability to maintain this production rate in the cracking and leaching unit, prompting Lynas to undertake a series of work programmes involving equipment changes and materials handling, to allow the units to operate continuously at nameplate capacity.

Lynas assured shareholders that none of these programmes would involve significant capital investment, and would be in place over the coming months.

During the three months to June, the Lamp produced some 144 t of rare-earth oxide, with 117 t shipped.

Lynas noted that in response to the challenging rare earths market conditions, the company has taken a number of steps to strengthen its position and to ready itself to respond to improved market conditions.

One of these steps has been the optimisation of the Phase 1 project to operate at a capacity level of 11 000 t/y until market prices recover. Lynas would also continue with the commissioning of the Phase 2 expansion of Lamp, to some 22 000 t/y, ahead of an expected start up in the third quarter of this year.

However, the subsequent ramp-up of Phase 2 production would be determined by market conditions.
