Underground coal equipment manufacturer Phillips Machine South Africa will showcase its shuttle cars, battery scoops and a range of refurbished equipment and aftermarket services at this year’s Electra Mining Africa trade show.

The company manufactures original-equipment manufacturer (OEM) batch haulage vehicles that complement the increased production rates of modern day continuous miners and refurbishes any underground coal mining equipment according to customer requirements.

Its shuttle car offering has evolved from battery powered to cable powered and also includes a diesel-electric version.

The High Capacity (HC) shuttle car offering ranges from the HC08 (8 t payload) to HC30 (30 t payload) which has a higher payload capacity than competitor products in the same ranges, meaning more haulage tons per trip to the feeder breaker or less trips required to mine the same material, which significantly improves productivity and increases profitability.

Most of the components for the HC Shuttle Cars are either manufactured in the company’s Middelburg, Mpumalanga, facility or sourced locally. The fabrication, assembly, final testing and applications are performed locally, while a few of the smaller, IP components are imported.

Phillips Machine exports shuttle cars from its South African manufacturing facilities to Russia, India, Canada and Mexico.

The machines offer several advantages, including low running costs, low tramming height, versatility, increased payloads and local support. The products have also been successfully implemented in coal-to-fuel company Sasol Mining’s underground coal mines.

Its battery scoop offering is made up of both the S280 and S360 models that offer customers low running costs, robust and reliable haulage vehicles for low seam operations.

The battery powered units are fitted with imported lead acid batteries for increased run time, reduced maintenance and increased battery life. Intelligent charging units are supplied to ensure that battery cells get the correct charging cycle and eliminates damage to cells.

As a value add to the battery scoops, Phillips Machine has developed a mobile battery bay for its customers to comply with all the relevant safety requirements, as well as with Department of Mineral Resources requirements and reduce battery bay relocation time.

Phillips Machine has recently delivered its first OEM continuous miner for the mining of phosphate in Mexico which has met all customer’s expectations and could increase market share going forward on phosphate operations.

Phillips Machine South Africa has focused its business around the customer with an aim of providing solutions for the supply of quality engineered products, improved reliability and easy maintenance of equipment. The company’s customer focused team enables it to manufacture, refurbish and support equipment according to customer requirements, and “do whatever it takes with integrity. This, in turn, ensures that we become not only a preferred supplier of OEM products, but also become a preferred partner for the refurbishment of underground mining equipment and, by so doing, building our brand further”, says Phillips Machine South Africa MD John Pinheiro.

Phillips Machine Services is the largest independently owned rebuild and repair facility and also the largest source for used underground coal mining equipment in the US.
