Electronics group, college team up on artisan push
The Ekurhuleni West College (EWC), on the East Rand, in Gauteng, and LG Electronics SA signed a pledge of commitment last month to work together, in response to government’s call to produce more artisans for South Africa.
The motivation for the pledge is that South Africa's pool of intermediate skills, especially artisanal skills, is too low to support national and sector development and growth, leading to these skills being imported from other countries for developmental projects.
The pledge will help alleviate some of the challenges the country faces and contribute to realising the objectives of the National Skills Development Strategy III. These objectives include promoting the growth of a public further education and training (FET) college system that is responsive to sector, local, regional and national skills needs and priorities; increasing access to occupationally directed programmes; and encourage better use of workplace-based skills development.
Further, it will address the commitments of the National Skills Accord, as the accord commitments aim to strengthen skills development through a partnership between the constituencies. The training and development of artisans, as well as promoting internships and placements for college graduates, will also be addressed.
The pledge will assist EWC not only in achieving its objectives and delivering its mandate, as prescribed by the Department of Higher Education and Training, but also in becoming an FET institution of choice.
