LAW-ABIDING PLEDGE
Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU), president Joseph Mathunjwa (right), seen with AMCU national treasurer Jimmy Gama (left), promised at last Thursday’s media conference that the union would be law-abiding at all times. “Everything we do, we will do according to the law,” he said, as he advocated that Mineral Resources Minister Susan Shabangu revoke Anglo American Platinum’s (Amplats’) licences at its Rustenburg operations in retaliation for the proposal of the world’s largest platinum miner that it closes two mines, mothballs four shafts, sells Union mine and reduces its workforce from 59 000 to 45 000 people. At a time of soaring costs, mining is being simultaneously hobbled by four times more recycled platinum coming on to the market, a 9% fall in autocatalyst demand and China keeping down the jewellery platinum price. Despite its difficulties, Amplats has undertaken to offer a new nonmining job to every one of its retrenched employees who loses a mining job.
