PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Mineral sands miner Base Resources has reported lower production from its Kwale operations, in Kenya, during the quarter ended December, as lower ore grades impacted on output.

Base on Tuesday told shareholders that heavy mineral concentrate production declined by 4% quarter-on-quarter to 165 953 t, despite the higher mining tonnage and continued improvement in recoveries.

The Kwale operation mined some 2.3-million tonnes during the quarter under review, a 6% increase on the September quarter, but ore grades reached only 7.5% heavy mineral, compared with the 8.4% heavy mineral reported previously.

Ilmenite production for the quarter was reported at 108 000 t, up 7% on the previous quarter, while rutile production increased by 12%, to 18 672 t and zircon production remained stable at 5 308 t. Base reported an 8% total increase in the production of final products as the various process circuits improved their recovery rates.

Base said that over the next quarter, the company would focus on improving its zircon recoveries by improving the wet zircon piping and pumping systems, to provide greater control and flexibility.
