Brief Description
The Koolan Island mine is Mount Gibson’s flagship operation, and has the status of being Australia’s highest-grade direct shipping hematite iron-ore operation.
Brief History
Mount Gibson acquired Koolan Island through the takeover of Aztec Resources in 2007.

Silicon, aluminium and phosphorous.
Geology/Mineralisation
Kooln Island’s mineralised zone is an overturned enriched haematitic sandstone horizon within the Yampi Sandstone Member, unconformably overlying the Elgee Siltstone. It is between 12 m and 30 m thick, and dips 55° to 80° to the south.
Reserves
Total ore reserves as at June 30, 2022, were estimated at 16-million tonnes grading 64.5% iron, 4.79% silicon oxide, 0.85% aluminium oxide and 0.013% phosphorous.
Resources
Total mineral resources as at June 30, 2022, were estimated at 44.7-million tonnes grading 63.6% iron, 7.71% silicon oxide, 0.61% aluminium oxide and 0.013% phosphorous.
Mining Method
Conventional drill/blast and load/haul with an excavator and large openpit mining equipment.
Major Infrastructure/Equipment
Koolan Island includes crushing facilities, which were upgraded in 2021. The upgrade comprised the construction of a new run-of-mine, ore-retaining wall, a feed bin, jaw and cone crushers, and screening circuits.
Prospects
Mining is continuing to plan, allowing for the continued build-up of substantial high-grade iron-ore stockpiles.
