King of the Hills mine and processing hub, Australia
Name of the Mine
King of the Hills (KOTH) mine and processing hub.
Location
Eastern Goldfields region of Western Australia.
Mine Owner/s
Red 5.
Brief Description
KOTH comprises a 4.75-million-ounce mineral resource and 2.7-million-ounce ore reserve, making it one of the top ten biggest mines in Australia by reserves. The openpit has a forecast 16-year life-of-mine (LoM), and the underground mine an initial five-year LoM – which is expected to continue with further exploration.
Brief History
First gold was poured at the mine June 2022 and commercial production was declared in December 2022.
Primary Metals/Minerals
Gold.
Secondary Metals/Minerals
None stated.
Geology/Mineralisation
KOTH is situated on the eastern contact of an Archaean granodiorite pluton, with overlying Archaean supracrustal greenstone rocks of the Leonora Domain.
The key geological feature of the KOTH deposit is a large felsic granitoid, known as the Tarmoola Intrusion, emplaced into the volcano-sedimentary pile before mineralisation.
Reserves
Total proven and probable reserves as at June 30, 2022, were estimated at 70-million tonnes at 1.2 g/t gold for 2.7-million ounces of contained gold.
Resources
Total measured, indicated and inferred resources for KOTH openpit and underground as at June 30, 2022, were estimated at 95.3-million tonnes grading at 1.4g/t gold for 4.4-million ounces of contained gold.
The openpit has total mineral resources of 81.2-million tonnes grading at 1.3g/t gold for 3.4-million ounces of contained gold
The underground mine has total mineral resources of 14.1-million tonnes grading at 2.2g/t gold for one-million ounces of contained gold.
Mining Method
Mining is being undertaken by Red 5's mining business partner Macmahon Contractors. Openpit and underground mining will be undertaken from the main deposit, supported by three satellite pits over a 16-year life-of-mine.
Major Infrastructure/Equipment
The mine features a 4.7-million-tonne-a-year carbon-in-leach plant.
The underground mine fleet comprises two jumbos, two boggers and a supporting fleet, and includes the use of teleremote technology. The openpit fleet comprises a 360 t excavator, two 260 t excavators, 16 trucks and a supporting fleet.
Prospects
Red 5 is evaluating optimal mill throughput expansion and options to accelerate openpit mining.
