Keysbrook to start production ahead of schedule
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The $70-million Keysbrook mineral sands project, in Western Australia, is expected to produce its first product ahead of schedule.
The mine had initially been slated to start production in early 2016; however, project owner MZI Resources reported on Wednesday that construction activities were running ahead of schedule and that first production was now anticipated in the fourth quarter of this year.
First sales have been targeted for the first quarter of 2016.
“Very shortly, the Keysbrook project will become operational and will be the world’s largest, and Western Australia’s first primary producer of leucoxene, as well as a substantial producer of zircon,” said MZI MD Trevor Matthews.
“The low risk and substantial exploration and recovery upside of the Keysbrook project creates an excellent foundation for MZI to become a significant supplier of premium mineral sands to the global market.”
At the end of August, the project was some 88% complete, with construction two to three weeks ahead of schedule.
MZI aims to produce more than 95 000 t/y of leucoxene and zircon from Keysbrook over its 5.5-year life span, which could be extended by a further 15 years based on mineral resources and pending further approvals and land arrangements.
