Kenmare delivers record ilmenite, zircon output
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Record output of ilmenite and primary zircon has been achieved from the Moma mine, in Mozambique, during the first half of this year, London-listed Kenmare Resources said on Tuesday.
Ilmenite production jumped 47% to 445 600 t during the first half of 2014, compared with 302 600 t in the comparative period the year before. During June, the mine produced 84 200 t of ilmenite.
Production in April and May had been impacted on by scheduled upgrades to the nonmagnetic circuits in the mineral separation plant designed to deliver increased zircon and rutile recoveries.
Kenmare noted that the work had been successfully concluded, with total zircon production increasing to 5 400 t in June.
Aggregate half-year zircon output increased 12% to 21 400 t, while heavy mineral concentrate production was up 26% to 604 200 t during the first six months of the year under review.
“Kenmare continued to deliver increased production and remains on track to achieving nameplate capacity on a sustainable basis,” said Kenmare MD Michael Carvill.
Total shipments of finished products during the first half of 2014 increased 36% to 399 000 t, comprising 382 200 t of ilmenite, 15 500 t of zircon and 1 300 t of rutile.
Closing stock of finished products reached 177 900 t by June.
“Though product prices remain subdued, we are focusing on the elements within our control to reduce unit costs and conserve cash in this subdued market environment.
“Unit cost reduction will be driven by further production increases in the second half of the year and complemented by the operational efficiencies we are targeting to reduce costs,” Carvill commented.
Kenmare planned to release its financial results for the six months ended June 30 on August 27.
