Project Description
Kanagala has proven reserves of 20.8-million tons of thermal coal. It comprises three properties – Wolvenfontein, Middelbult and Modderfontein.
Saleable coal tonnages averaging 2.1-million tons a year will be achieved from a 2.4-million-ton-a-year run-of-mine production rate over the life of the mine, which is forecast at 8.5 years.
Value
A$49-million. All funding for the project has been secured.
Duration
Kangala will begin production in February 2014.
Latest Developments
Construction of the processing plant terrace on site started in June.
Off-site construction of the plant is progressing well, with the initial seven conveyor structures, the structural steelwork for the BC1 and BC2 raw coal crushing and screening plant complete.
The boxcut was expected to begin in July, with first coal scheduled for October.
The initial coal from the boxcut will be used for the base of the stockpiles to prevent contamination at a later stage.
The remaining boxcut coal will be used to commission the plant in December.

On Budget and on Time?
Universal has postponed the development of Kagala by two months, with production now scheduled for February 2014.
