Kalgoorlie rare earths processing plant, Australia – update
Name of the Project
Kalgoorlie rare earths processing plant.
Location
The project will be located in Kalgoorlie, in Western Australia.

Lynas Corporation.
Project Description
The Lynas Kalgoorlie plant will undertake the cracking and leaching of rare-earth concentrate from Lynas’ Mt Weld mine, which is also located in Western Australia’s Goldfields region.
The value-added processing to be undertaken in Kalgoorlie is aligned with the Australian government’s Critical Minerals Strategy and the objective of the Western Australian government to increase downstream processing and the development of intellectual property in the state.
Potential Job Creation
The plant is expected to create up to 500 jobs during peak construction.
Lynas intends to staff the plant with a local, residential workforce.
Net Present Value/Internal Rate of Return
Not stated.
Capital Expenditure
Not stated.
Planned Start/End Date
The Kalgoorlie plant is expected to be operational in early 2023.
Latest Developments
Lynas is hoping to start construction of its Kalgoorlie cracking and leaching facility by mid-2021, subject to approvals.
Approvals for the cracking and leaching facility will be regulated by state law, after Lynas received a decision under the federal Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act that the project was not considered a ‘controlled action’.
Lynas selected Kalgoorlie as the site for its new cracking and leaching plant in January as part of its 2025 growth plans. The new plant will upgrade the rare-earth concentrate from the Mt Weld operation, which is currently exported to Malaysia.
