Philippines-headquartered port management company International Container Terminal Services (ICTSI) has announced that it will construct its first container terminal in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as part of a 60/40 joint venture with local firm Simobile SPRL.

Located on the banks of the Congo river, in Matadi – the DRC’s primary entry point for containers into the country – Phase 1 of the project, dubbed ICTSI Congo DR, would involve the construction of two berths, with a total length of 350 m, to service shipping lines.

The Phase 1 facility, construction of which was estimated at around $100-million, would be able to handle 120 000 twenty-foot equivalent units and 350 000 mt, and was expected to become operational in 2015.

The capacity and berth length of the facility would be doubled during Phase 2 of the project.

ICTSI senior VP for Africa Jens Floe said the terminal would decrease overall shipping and transportation time in the country.

ICTSI had been involved in the operation and development of several marine terminals and port projects worldwide.
