Aim-listed Jubilee Metals has announced that its newly built Zambian copper concentrator Project Roan has reached nameplate capacity of 110 t/h following its successful commissioning and ramp-up.

“This is a defining milestone that transforms our operational footprint in Zambia. Despite a challenging construction period marred by Covid-19 and supply chain interruptions, all construction activities at Project Roan were completed in 11 months,” Jubilee CEO Leon Coetzer said.

Project Roan is a core component of the company’s Zambian Southern Copper refining strategy, which aims to produce 12 000 t/y of copper through the Sable refinery in Zambia for a total capital investment of about £40-million. The throughput rate of Project Roan is needed to produce the targeted copper concentrate for refining at the Sable refinery.

The Sable refinery was acquired from diversified miner Glencore in 2019.

“This investment is a fraction of the industry norm's capitalisation requirements per unit of copper,” Coetzer said.

Project Roan broke ground in June last year and the ramp-up of operations started one year later – in June this year.

The targeted production is 3 700 t of copper to December, with 10 000 t of copper for the full 12-month period ending June next year, representing a four-fold increase in copper production.

“With the completed hand-over by the projects team, the operational efficiencies will continue to be optimised under the management of our operational team. Our projects team’s focus now shifts on to the commissioning and ramp-up of the cobalt circuit, as well as the much larger Northern Refining project,” Coetzer said.
