Jobs jibes are flying with mining companies going all out to cut costs to survive and government pleading for job retention. African National Congress secretary general Gwede Mantashe accused Anglo American CEO Mark Cutifani of laziness in deciding to cut 6 000 mining jobs and Mineral Resources Minister Ngoako Ramatlhodi has to urged State electricity utility Eskom not to impose coal specification penalties on Glencore’s Optimum Coal to avoid mine closure and consequent job loss. The Minister pleaded with gold-mining unions not to go on strike for the same reason and urged business, labour and government to each do something to save jobs.
