PERTH (miningweekly.com) - Lithium miner Galaxy Resources on Tuesday reported that its Jiangsu plant, in China, had reached stable production, after operations were restarted earlier this month.

Two workers were killed at the Jiangsu plant, after a fiberglass pipe burst in November last year.

The plant was shut down and an investigation into the incident was launched, with operations only restarting earlier this month.

Galaxy told shareholders on Tuesday that the plant was now fully operational and producing battery-grade lithium carbonate product, which met the tight quality and purity specifications demanded by battery cathode manufacturing customers.

MD Iggy Tan said that while it was a very difficult and emotional quarter for the Jiangsu and Galaxy staff, it was a credit to the Jiangsu team that the plant was brought back on line in such a timely manner.

“Jiangsu is now producing at a stable rate and, importantly, producing the desired battery-grade lithium carbonate. We will now continue to increase production and sales as part of Jiangsu’s ramp-up programme,” Tan said.

The plant has a production capacity of some 17 000 t/y of battery-grade lithium carbonate, and would be the largest producer in the Asia Pacific region, as well as the fourth-largest producer in the world.
