Project Description
The Jansen potash project has an estimated measured resource of 5.33-million tonnes and an inferred resource of 1.29-million, both grading at 25.7% potassium oxide, 7.1% insolubles and 0.07% magnesium oxide.

The greenfield project, located about 140 km east of Saskatoon, is being designed to produce about eight-million tonnes a year of agricultural-grade potash in three separate phases. The project has an estimated 70-year life-of-mine.

Value
BHP Billiton’s investment in the project to date has reached $3.8-billion.

Duration
The investment will be spread over several years, with completion of the production and service shafts expected in 2016, while the associated works programme will extend into 2017.

Latest Developments
BHP is investing $2.6-billion to complete the excavation and lining of the Jansen project’s production and service shafts, and continue the installation of essential infrastructure and utilities. This will take the company’s total commitment to Jansen to an estimated $3.8-billion. The successful excavation and lining of both shafts will substantially reduce development risk and enable the company to time first production to meet growth in market demand.
