This is ArcelorMittal’s opencast iron-ore mine in Kryvyi Rih, in Ukraine, where the company produces concentrate, lump and sinter feed. Mining is core to the growth strategy of ArcelorMittal, which produces steel in South Africa as ArcelorMittal South Africa (AMSA) and operates the Thabazimbi iron-ore mine, in Limpopo. In 2017, the group’s iron-ore mines and strategic contracts, which are spread across the US, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Liberia, Bosnia and Kazakhstan, produced 57.4-million tonnes of iron-ore, steelmaking’s primary raw material. South Africa’s National Union of Metalworkers last week declared a strike at AMSA plants over the use of labour brokers.
