TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – The installation of Western Canada’s largest cone crusher is reported to be progressing on schedule and within budget.

Owner Copper Mountain Mining on Wednesday said all the constituent parts of the new permanent secondary crushing solution had now been delivered to its eponymous mine site and the crusher building was substantially complete.

The lower bowl assembly, which was the largest component piece of the crusher, weighing in at more than 100 t, had been safely lifted into place. This paved the way for the upper main frame of the crusher to be installed with the help of one of the mine's 240 t haul trucks.

The existing 1 km overland conveyor that transferred ore from the primary crusher to the mill feed stockpile had been modified to accommodate the tie-in to the new secondary crusher. A new transfer chute was also installed over a four-day period without any interruption to the milling operation.

This transfer chute was a critical component to the new system and Copper Mountain said it was working well, allowing the current operation to continue uninterrupted for the rest of the secondary crusher construction period.

This crusher had the ability to crush the six-inch rock from the primary crusher down to the minus two-inch size. The new crushing facility was designed to operate at a rate of 3 000 t/h and to meet high tonnage applications.

The $40-million crusher facility was expected to be complete by mid-summer. Once installed, all of the mill feed would be sized to the two-inch range, which would allow the mill to operate consistently at or above design capacity rates of 35 000 t/d.

Last year, to increase mill throughput, Copper Mountain implemented short-term mitigating measures, which had proved to be successful. These measures included using an increased powder factor in blasting the ore to smaller pieces and adding three portable in-pit crushers.
