Mpumalanga and Limpopo are expected to get a broadband boost as State-owned Broadband Infraco nears the completion of its Northern Ring capacity upgrade project.

Infraco is upgrading its Northern Ring telecommunications infrastructure to 40 Gb/s technology over fibre-optic cables, running parallel to the existing 10 Gb/s link.

The upgraded infrastructure, which is scalable in 40 Gb/s increments to meet current and future needs, spans urban and rural regions from Gauteng to Polokwane – with a spur link extending to Zimbabwe – Soekmekaar, Tzaneen, Hoedspruit and Nelspruit, before closing the link to Pretoria, through Ngodwana, Belfast and Witbank.

Infraco is on track to complete Phase 1 – the upgrade of the spur link to Infraco’s international gateway at Beitbridge – in June, followed by the expected August completion of the remainder of the sites during Phase 2.

“Once completed, the Northern Ring will rival the Golden Triangle as the nerve centre of major transmission connectivity in South Africa at 480 Gb/s,” the firm says.

The current capacity of the Northern Ring is 160 Gb/s, compared with the 677 Gb/s on the Golden Triangle, which encompasses Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg.

Meanwhile, Infraco and the Limpopo Economic Development Agency (Leda) last week signed a memorandum of understanding in efforts to fast-track the province’s broadband network development.

Infraco and Leda’ public–public partnership aims to facilitate the joint planning of the roll-out of the Limpopo Broadband Network, the establishment of high-capacity points of presence (PoPs) and the construction of national long-distance PoP sites.

Infraco will also provide affordable international connectivity as required by Leda, as well as use the services of local suppliers during the roll-out.
