India’s NMDC project attacked by extremists
KOLKATA (miningweekly.com) – Indian iron-ore major NMDC Limited’s Dantewada operations, in Chhattisgarh, were attacked by ultra left-wing extremists in the early hours of Wednesday.
The attackers set on fire the conveyor belt transportation system, which moves nearly 20 000 t/d of ore.
Company officials indicated that it would take several days to restore ore transportation from the mines.
NMDC’s Dantewada sites, a hotbed of ultra left-wing extremism, account for over 25-million tonnes a year of production from its operations at Bailadila Hills, Bacheli and Kirandul, while its Bellary mines, in Karnataka province, account for five-million tonnes a year.
NMDC has recently seen an upturn in violence directed at its mining assets. Two years ago, the miner’s 230 km slurry pipeline used for evacuation of ore from Bailadila mines was damaged beyond repair, in an explosion. In May 2012, extremists attacked the Kirandul mines, killing six security personnel and a driver and carrying out looting.
