The owners of the Jeffreys Bay wind Farm, which is under construction on a 3 700 ha site in the Eastern Cape, recently commissioned photo- grapher Dirk Moggee to document the process of erecting the wind turbines, as well as the associated infrastructure and equipment.

A consortium, led by majority share- holder Globeleq, is developing the pro- ject. The consortium also includes Mainstream Renewable Power, Thebe Investment Corporation, Old Mutual’s IDEAS Managed Fund, Enzani Technologies, Usizo Engineering and the Amandla Omoya Trust.

The wind farm is 138 MW in size, and will incorporate 60 turbines in all. It is expected to be completed by mid-2014 and will supply 460 000 MWh/y, which is enough electrical energy to meet the needs of 110 000 average South African households.

The photographs, made available to Engineering News, cover various construction aspects – from the transportation of the large components to the preparation of the foundations, the cabelling and the final erection of the towers, rotors and turbines.
