Platinum mining company Impala Platinum (Implats) plans to build 4 500 additional houses for its employees in South Africa and Zimbabwe.

In the last of a five-day Chamber of Mines mass-media print campaign on how the beleaguered mining industry can be positively restructured, Implats CEO Terence Goodlace says the building of another 2 500 houses has begun near the company’s Impala mine in South Africa and a further 2 000 are planned in Zimbabwe.

In the last three years, Implats has spent R1.3-billion on 1 555 houses and converted former mine hostels into 5 000 family and single accommodation units.

In Zimbabwe, 630 houses have been built at the Zimplats and Mimosa mines.

The company is also planning to increase its support for education, health, skills development, local procurement and small business development.

“Only a partnership between government and the mining industry can undertake the structured generational planning needed to create sustainable communities and alternative industries,” Goodlace adds.
