PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Mineral sands miner Iluka has reported a 8% drop in production for the quarter ended September, compared with the previous quarter, owing to planned maintenance work at the Narngulu mineral separation plant, in Western Australia, during August and September.

Total zircon, rutile and synthetic rutile production during the three months to September reached 192 000 t, compared with the 220 900 t produced in the June quarter, while ilmenite production fell from 123 400 t to 97 100 t.

In the year-to-date, zircon, rutile and synthetic rutile production was 25% higher than the previous corresponding period, at 657 000 t, as production from the Sierra rutile operation, in Sierra Leone, was included in 2017.

Iluka told shareholders on Friday that during the September quarter, 164 000 t of heavy mineral concentrate was produced across all its operations, while 301 000 t of ore was processed, which reflected the continued draw down of heavy mineral concentrate from the Jacinth-Ambrosia mine, which was currently idle, as well as the Woronack, Rownac and Pirro mine, where mining was completed in 2015.

Processing all of the Murray Basin heavy mineral concentrate was completed in October, and the plant has now been idled.

Meanwhile, the synthetic rutile kiln continued to operate at full capacity during the quarter.

The company on Friday maintained its zircon, rutile and synthetic rutile production target of 795 000 t for the full year.
