Illegal miner dies at PT Antam mine
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – An illegal miner was killed and five others were injured at ASX-listed PT Antam’s gold operation, in West Java, after one of the tunnels operated by the illegal miners collapsed.
The company said on Friday that its emergency response group, along with the Nanggung police and the local community, had managed to evacuate all the injured.
The illegal tunnel was located near the level 700 Clurug gold vein, which PT Antam said was no longer in operation, and is used as a ventilation tunner. The 60-cm-wide illegal tunnel was located some 25 m below surface, and had no supporting infrastructure, the miner said.
None of Antam’s own personnel were injured during the incident, and operations continued as normal.
The company noted that it had been working on a strategy to reduce illegal mining activities, and said on Friday that the bulk of these activities were performed in the national park, neighbouring the Pongkor gold mine.
