National multistakeholder advisory body the Human Resources Development Council of South Africa (HRDCSA) adopted several recommendations at its meeting in December, amid general consensus that the country’s skills system faced a number of challenges from the design and implementation perspectives.

High on the agenda of the meeting, which was attended by HRDCSA chairperson and Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, was the tabling for adoption of the draft National Integrated Human Resource Development plan.

This was accompanied by the Skills System Review Technical Task Team’s recommendations, as well as the council’s first term of office’s achievements.

All recommendations were accepted and thereafter referred to the Department of Higher Education and Training for implementation. The department is expected to report back to the council by June.

Following the adoption of the plan by the council, it will be launched formally, while implementers, such as government departments and State-owned companies as indicated in the plan, will be expected to incorporate issues identified into their own operational plans.

The implementers will then be expected to report regularly to the council on the progress made.

Meanwhile, the Technical Task Team on The Production of Professionals also tabled its recommendations, which were accepted.
