PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Copper miner Hillgrove Resources has increased throughput at its Kanmantoo copper mine, in South Australia, after installing and commissioning a new primary crusher circuit.

Ore processing throughput has now increased from 2.4-million tons to 2.8-million tons a year to produce some 80 000 t/y of copper concentrate.

Hillgrove said on Thursday that a replacement of the previous circuit was required following an assessment which found that the crusher circuit failed to perform to expected levels during the ramp-up of the processing plant in 2012. The circuit arrangement constrained overall performance at the mine, and required temporary work-around solutions to maintain throughput levels.

“The new crusher has already demonstrated its capacity to crush at rates of 2.8-million tons a year, which has enabled production to be increased by managing direct ore feed and stockpiles on the run-of-mine pad,” said MD and CEO Greg Hall.

He noted that with Kanmantoo now achieving the targeted yearly production for the mine, and the resulting revenue, the project was on track.

“Combine that with the project progressing steadily towards its goal of extending the estimated period of operation from six-and-a-half to more than ten years, and there is a substantial increase in project value long-term.”

Hall added that the new life-of-mine plan, along with the improvement of copper feed grade to the mill from the main Kavanagh pit, with lower costs achieved through processing simplification, would establish Kanmantoo’s positive cash generation.

Meanwhile, Hillgrove was currently finalising updates to its mineral resource and reserve base, and was expected to release a resource update during the second quarter of this year, while a reserve update was expected in the third quarter.
