Higher Q1 output for Continental Coal
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Southern Africa-focused Continental Coal has increased its run-of-mine (RoM) thermal coal production by 20% quarter-on-quarter in the three months to September, helped by the new Penumbra mine’s production.
Continental Coal produced 650 867 t of coal from its Vlakvarkfontein, Ferreira and Penumbra operations, in Mpumalanga.
Continental on Friday reported that production build-up at Penumbra was on track, with the mine expected to achieve its design capacity of 600 000 t/y in November.
The production results for the first quarter of 2014 were also 10% higher than the average quarterly RoM production of 593 044 t achieved during the 2013 financial year.
The Vlakvarkfontein mine produced 419 889 t during the quarter under review, which was 4% lower than the previous corresponding period, but 21% above the planned production.
The operation was expected to deliver about 1.3-million tonnes of coal in 2014.
At Ferreira, Continental delivered 136 422 t of coal, a 29% increase on the previous corresponding quarter. The Ferreira mine was nearing the end of its mine life and was expected to deplete its resource by November.
The Penumbra operation produced 94 556 t RoM during the first quarter.
Continental also reported that thermal coal sales were up by 38% on the previous comparable quarter, to 563 220 t, and showed a 27% increase over the average quarterly sales for the 2013 financial year.
