Hemlo mine, Canada
This article has been supplied.
Name of the Mine
Hemlo mine.
Location
About 35 km east of Marathon, Ontario, Canada, along the Trans-Canada Highway.
Mine Owner/s
Barrick Gold Corporation (100%).
Brief Description
The Hemlo mine is a well-established gold mining operation that has been in continuous production since 1985. It is a combination of underground and surface mining operations.
Brief History
Gold was discovered in the Hemlo area in 1981 and mining operations started in 1985. The mine has gone through several phases of ownership and development, eventually becoming wholly owned by Barrick Gold. The mine has produced more than 21-million ounces of gold and remains a significant contributor to Barrick's gold production portfolio.
Primary Metals/Minerals
Gold.
Secondary Metals/Minerals
There are no significant secondary minerals reported for the Hemlo mine.
Geology/Mineralisation
The Hemlo deposit is characterised by disseminated and stockwork mineralisation within a volcanic-sedimentary sequence of the Hemlo greenstone belt. The gold mineralisation is associated with a quartz-sericite-carbonate schist, often referred to as the “Hemlo Shear Zone.” The deposit is structurally controlled, with gold occurring in pyrite and arsenopyrite-rich zones, as well as within quartz veins. The orebody is steeply dipping and has been traced over a strike length of 2 500 m.
Reserves
As of December 31, 2023, the Hemlo mine has total proven and probable reserves of about 34-million tonnes grading 1.60 g/t gold, containing about 1.7-million ounces of gold.
Resources
Measured and indicated resources as of December 31, 2023, are estimated at 61-million tonnes grading 1.58 g/t gold, containing about 3.1-million ounces of gold. Inferred resources are estimated at 7.7-million tonnes grading 2.5 g/t gold, containing about 620 000 oz of gold.
Type of Mine
Underground and surface.
Mining Method
The primary mining method employed is underground longhole stoping. The mine also uses room-and-pillar mining in certain sections. Surface mining has been conducted in the past, but current operations are focused on underground extraction.
Major Infrastructure/Equipment
The Hemlo mine includes extensive infrastructure such as underground development, a processing plant, tailings storage facilities and various support facilities. The processing plant has a capacity of about 10 000 t/d and uses gravity, flotation and cyanidation methods to extract gold from the ore. The site also includes a water treatment plant and power generation facilities connected to the provincial grid.
Prospects
Exploration continues with a focus on extending the mine's life by discovering new mineralised zones and converting resources into reserves. Recent drilling efforts have been successful in expanding known resources and identifying additional mineralised areas at depth. The mine’s future also includes potential expansion of openpit operations, pending regulatory approvals and economic assessments.
