With more than three decades of experience and over 2 000 major installations to its credit, Afromix has supplied some of the largest agitators and peristaltic pumps in the world.

Reflecting on the company’s success, marketing coordinator Nadine Brockman says ongoing research and development (R&D), coupled with its ability to adapt and a reputation for problem solving, have helped Afromix be a leader in its field.

“Specialising in agitators as Afromix’s primary product has given us the upper hand [as we have ensured] that we are, in fact, specialists,” she says.

The company has worked hand-in-hand with mining groups, such as Anglo American, AngloGold Ashanti, BHP Billiton, Glencore, Gold Fields and Lonmin to develop robust, quality agitators and peristaltic pumps, which assist processing plants in achieving the best processing results, with minimum downtime.

“Afromix’s core business is mixing. As simple as the term may sound, there is no generic or standard approach towards a mixing application. “Afromix finds out what the process requirement is, seeks to understand the end result and, in turn, design and size an agitator, which will not only successfully deliver on process efficiencies but also on time and energy efficiently,” Brockman continues.

In 2008, Afromix identified a need in the market for a specialised pump after being approached by numerous clients with unusual applications. Many clients have come to know Afromix’s ingenuity with regard to its agitators, especially with their ability for handling difficult applications in sensitive processes, says the company. This, coupled with the need for a steady workflow in Afromix’s factory, in Uitenhage, in the Eastern Cape, drove the desire to incorporate an additional product into its range.

Afromix embarked on an R&D journey and soon engineered another product that it could call its own: the AFX pump series.

Brockman says the company’s pump series has come a long way since its humble origins, but that it is now considered a market leader.

“In its third generation, the AFX series is one of Afromix’s proudest achievements and is now used internationally across various applications and industries,” she states.

The AFX pump series offers a significant power saving over that achieved by its competitors, which helps clients reduce their operating costs. The product’s capital cost is also lower, as it is locally manufactured.

AFX pumps are successfully handling high solids and high-density applications at mines belonging to some of the world’s leading mining companies.

Afromix supplies the AFX pump series with solid rollers in various materials, press fitted with sealed roller bearing and double lip oil seals to provide maximum component life. The roller technology provides a significant power saving as there is less resistance during operation. With the elimination of most of the friction normally encountered in a shoe-type peristaltic pump, customers benefit from an increase in hose life.
