PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Heavy weather in South Africa's Mpumalanga province has negatively affected junior gold miner Vantage Goldfield’s production for the three months ended March.

During the quarter under review, the company produced 7 786 oz of gold, compared with the 9 227 oz delivered in the previous quarter.

The ASX-listed company reported on Wednesday that heavy rainfall in the region made underground mining and milling conditions difficult during the quarter. However, Vantage pointed out that tonnage throughput at its Lily and Barbrook mines, in the Barberton goldfied, had increased, to balance the lower-grade ore encountered at the Barbrook operation.

Despite the lower grades at Barbrook, the mine produced the highest quarterly gold output since the mine was re-opened in 2011.

During the three months under review, the Barbrook operation produced 1 569 oz of gold, compared with the 1 495 oz produced in the previous quarter.

At Lily, Vantage produced 6 217 oz of gold, compared with the 7 732 oz produced in the December quarter.

Vantage was currently working to increase output at both its operations, with additional underground trackless machinery expected at Lily, while a Stage 2 expansion was planned at Barbrook, to increase production to 180 000 t/y.
