PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Gold miner St Barbara has temporarily suspended operations at its Gold Ridge mine, in the Solomon Islands, following heavy rains brought on by a slow-moving tropical low pressure system.

The company on Thursday closed the openpit mines to ensure the safety of personnel and equipment. A section of the haul road had also been temporarily damaged by flooding, and St Barbara noted that the access road to the mine had been closed owing to flooding.

The processing plant at Gold Ridge continued to process existing stockpiles until late Thursday.

The Solomon Islands meteorological service has issued a heavy rain warning, and rain was expected to fall for the next several days.

The Gold Ridge operation produced 14 912 oz during the quarter ended December.
