PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Recruiting expert Hays expects subdued employment levels in Western Australia during the first quarter of 2015, as the rapid decline in iron-ore prices impacts on the market.

In its latest quarterly employment research, Hays pointed out that the recent decline in iron-ore prices had had a negative impact on the overall sentiment in the mining sector in Western Australia, despite the state government’s recent announcement of potential royalty relief for junior miners.

Hays noted that with coal prices holding steady, employers in New South Wales were looking at ways to optimise their business operations and maintain staff numbers.

Research by Hays indicated that there had been a significant increase in contract recruitment as organisations look to use the services of agencies to employ technical experts for short- to medium-term contracts.

Candidate levels remain high; however, mining-related businesses are finding it difficult to find good tradespeople, in particular boilermakers, welders and diesel mechanics with relevant mining equipment experience.

Meanwhile, recruitment activity in South Australia remained subdued owing to lower commodity prices leading to lower production and maintenance activity levels across the board.

In Queensland, employers could be more specific with their requirements given candidate supply, Hays noted, adding that employers would likely require candidates to have all induction programmes completed prior to starting in a role.
