JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Operations at Harmony Gold’s mines returned to normal on Monday following a resolution between the country’s second-largest gold producer and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) over wage increases.

Over the weekend, Harmony’s NUM-affiliated members accepted a previously rejected wage increase of between 7.5% and 8%, ending a protected strike that began on September 3.

On Friday, NUM members at Sibanye Gold and AngloGold Ashanti also accepted the offer negotiated between themselves and employers represented by the Chamber of Mines.

Harmony CEO Graham Briggs on Monday warned that the strike by NUM members, who comprised about 21 139 of the 30 000-strong Harmony workforce, would impact on the group’s performance for the quarter, as well as on employee earnings.

However, he lauded the conduct of the miners during the strike.

“I would like to make special mention of the conduct of the people of Harmony during this period. Employers and employees are not always going to agree and different unions are not always going to be on the same course.

“The recent industrial action was conducted to the letter of the law and in the spirit of constructive industrial relations envisaged in our Constitution and labour legislation. I congratulate employees, unions and management in upholding the fundamental rights of all,” he said in a statement.
