JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Mining major Harmony Gold said on Wednesday that it expected gold production for the quarter ended March 31 to be between 12% and 15% lower than the previous quarter, owing to several operational challenges in recent months.

Among these were a production stoppage at Doornkop, in Mpumalanga, owing to an accident in February, the flooding of the shaft bottom at the Joel mine, in the Witwatersrand basin, and a “slower turnaround” at the Kusasalethu mine, near Carltonville.

In addition, production at Harmony’s Free State-based Steyn 2 shaft was suspended six months earlier than its original life-of-mine plan, owing to the safety risk posed by seismicity in the working areas.

Harmony would release its results for the quarter on May 6.
